Marc Nevarez Did Not Deserve to Die

December 28, 2020

In our December 24th press statement about the murder of Marc Nevarez, we mistakenly stated that he was unarmed when running away from Officer Roberto Gomez on October 23, 2020. However, whether he had a gun in his hand when he ran or not, Mr. Nevarez didn’t deserve to be shot in the back and killed by Officer Gomez, who had no right to act as judge, jury and executioner in this case, and does not belong on our streets. We continue to demand that Officer Gomez be held accountable for the murder of Marc Nevarez. Gomez showed no intention of de-escalating the situation -- he merely rolled up and started blasting as Mr. Nevarez ran.

We invite all who stand on the side of justice to join us in saying that we cannot accept having youth gunned down in the streets by police as the solution to decades of systemic and racist disinvestment of Chicago's Black and Brown communities. Until those communities have the power to change this and decide for ourselves who polices us and how our communities are policed through an all-elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC), police occupation and terror will continue to violate our rights and safety. In the meantime, we demand justice for Marc Nevarez. And we stand with the victims of police murder and all those brutalized and oppressed by a lethal institution that will continue to control us until we control it. Justice for Marc Nevarez! CPAC now!
