Chicago Alliance Slams the Cover-Up of the Anjanette Young Case: Justice for Anjanette Now!
January 1, 2021
The Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression is outraged by the cover-up of the horrific 2019 no-knock raid of Anjanette Young's house and the lackluster efforts from Mayor Lori Lightfoot's Administration to hold the Chicago Police Department accountable. Lightfoot's refusal to meet with Ms. Young shows her complicity in the Chicago Police Department's impunity. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigation continues to drag on while the police who barged into Ms. Young's residence remain on the CPD payroll. Time and time again, Mayor Lightfoot and her lackeys continue to show that they will defend and protect crooked cops.
We demand that all members of CPD and Lightfoot's Administration who played a role in the brutal raid and the subsequent cover-up be held accountable for their crimes. We also demand the immediate resignation of Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who has refused to stand with the victims and survivors of police impunity. We call on our allies and all strands of the people's movement to join in solidarity with Ms. Young and demand justice.
What happened to Ms. Young is not an anomaly that was committed by a few bad apples in the police department; it reflects a pattern of abuse and mistreatment that Black and Latino people have faced for decades at the hands of the Chicago Police. Lightfoot's attempted cover-up, just like former Mayor Rahm Emanuel's cover-up of the police shooting of Laquan McDonald, highlights exactly why police accountability has to be in the hands of an independent body. It's time for the Chicago Police to stop traumatizing oppressed communities in this city by barging into our homes unannounced with their guns drawn in our faces. It is time for an all-elected Civilian Police Accountability Council to end this horrific practice by giving us a clear pathway to self-empowerment, where we say who polices our communities and how our communities are policed.
